The 2019 BMW X7 is the most high end AND Largest SUV ever built by BMW. Loaded with high tech goodies such as lane keep, dynamic cruise control, and parking assistant. We tested all of the features and everything was helpful except the Parking Assistant and gesture controls.
BMW finally added a three-row SUV to its lineup with its seventh SUV, the hard to miss 2020 X7, and we’ve been impressed with what we’ve seen of it so far … except for maybe the grille, which could be charitably described as “polarizing.” Or “ginormous.” The production version may not have the gaping, bucktoothed maw of the concept, but it’s still quite large.
The X7 seats six or seven with a standard second-row bench or optional captain’s chairs. Power comes from either a 335-horsepower, 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine or a 4.4-liter V-8 putting out 456 horses. Both engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard.
It is becoming a curious motoring world. On the one hand, city cars are shrinking to meet the needs of a rising urban population and strict emission laws. Then certain cars are getting bigger and bigger with luxury sports utilities, like this X7, moving into the spot once occupied by premium sedans. Although not a style of vehicle design that resonates with me, I can see the attraction. The SUV size speaks clearly of status. The high driving position makes you feel in command – possibly even superior to other road users. The X7 may be large, but it is surprisingly easy to maneuver and once inside, snug in the soft seats, treated to one of the many massage options on the menu, you will hardly notice the bulk and the bling.
Driven: All-New BMW X7, The Ultimate In SUV Luxury Driving
The X7 is tall, wide and proud. The archetype BMW kidney grille is large and prominent; it is polished and flanked by the latest laser lights. The X7 sits on 22-inch alloys and some models come with extra jewelry in the shape of a Swarovski crystal adorned gearshift.
