The first 8 Series with an “M” badge
The BMW 8 Series returned in 2018 after almost 20 years. Developed to replace the 6 Series, the 8 Series is sportier, more modern, and enables BMW to compete against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe. For the first time ever, the 8 Series will be upgraded to M8 specifications by the company’s high-performance division. The M8 will brake cover sometime in 2019.
When BMW introduced the 8 Series back in 1989, it reshaped the full-size luxury segment with a car that was gorgeous, unique, and loaded with innovative features. Discontinued in 1999, the 8 Series returned almost two decades later in 2018. The M8’s arrival will mark a premiere for the nameplate, which didn’t receive the M treatment in the 1990s. Although BMW did make a prototype, it eventually decided that there’s no market for the M8 and the project was scrapped. Alessandro Zanardi successfully completed his first test in the BMW M8 GTE this week in preparation for the 2019 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona in January. Alex spent three days with the BMW M Motorsport crew testing at Miramas in the south of France.

There’s (finally!) a new BMW 8 Series on the market and it’s awesome. It’s the latest and greatest coupe from the Bavarian brand, which is expecting its convertible version relatively soon. It will be joined by a full-blown M8 in the near future and, while a V12 variant has been ruled out, an even more powerful derivative could be in the works.
Earlier this week, BMW hosted a series of VIP customers in Paris, previewing a series of upcoming models. As expected, cell phone use was prohibited, but BMW M is planning an M8 Competition, a model that really comes as no surprise considering that the M5 also got the sportier package.
BMW first confirmed it would be building a full-fledged M version of its new range-topping 8-Series coupe in May of 2017. Since then, we’ve driven the M850i xDrive, and loved it -but we still haven’t seen the M8 fully uncovered. This video of it testing on the Nurburgring gives us a closer look than ever.
